Duplin Winery is known for its Muscadine wines, but two of the best wines for summer don’t start in the usual vineyards: Blackberry and Bald Head Red.
Our Blackberry is slightly sweet and earthy, like fresh blackberries. That’s because we don’t use any artificial blackberry flavoring. And although the wine doesn’t contain Muscadine grapes, Blackberry still contains substantial levels of resveratrol, an antioxidant that may lower cholesterol and provide other health benefits.
Try Blackberry on ice. Better yet, fill a tall glass with a ½ cup of blackberry wine, drop in two big scoops of vanilla ice cream, pour on some club soda and stir for an adult ice cream soda. Don’t forget the fresh blackberries on top.
Lots of fun facts surround Bald Head Red, a slightly sweet, light-bodied wine with a citrus hint. It’s made with pink Catawba grapes, a vitis labrusca variety and one of the earliest native American grapes used in wine production. In the early to mid-1800s, most wines in America were made with these grapes.
North Carolina’s Old Baldy Lighthouse is on the label, but Bald Head Red was originally named Shrimply Red, as it was developed for the state’s Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival. We changed the name in honor of all the bald heads that work at the winery, but it was also a chance for us to feature another of North Carolina’s beloved lighthouses.
