New Wine! Gray Fussell's special tribute to family and life's simple pleasures
Gerald Myrick. G-Da. Maverick.
My grandfather had many names. G-Da to his grandchildren. Maverick to his friends. But all of us knew Gerald Myrick had a special knack for celebrating life and sharing its joys with others. Whether it was a golf cart ride with his daughter, Angie (my mom) or an afternoon fishing with us grandkids, Maverick always made simple pleasures even better. His infectious nature touched everyone he met.
A great void was left when we lost Maverick to Alzheimer’s, a disease that has brought immense grief to countless families. Ours finds comfort in precious times with Maverick. We can’t help but smile when we talk about him. Remembering how much he loved Duplin Winery, always proudly wearing his Duplin shirts, my cousin, Case, and I were inspired to create a wine that embodies our grandfather’s enduring spirit and enormous heart.
This latest wine in my Gray Legacy Series gently balances the Muscadine grape's one-of-a-kind sweetness and the Niagara’s easy-going smoothness to match Maverick's irresistible charm. And because my grandfather was someone who made a difference in so many lives, we're further honoring his memory by donating a meaningful portionof proceeds from the sales of this wine towards Alzheimer's research.
Like my grandfather, Maverick is a companion for cherishing the company of those closest to us. There's something magical about enjoying this wine while surrounded by the people you love at family reunions, summer vacations and milestone celebrations. Maverick pairs with everything from Fourth of July chili dogs and cheeseburgers to potluck deviled eggs, chicken salad sliders and creamy potato salad. For an instant yet sophisticated vacation sipper, we love pouring Maverick over frozen summer fruit like blueberries, raspberries, and peaches. And when the evening winds down, a cold glass of Maverick paired with that last slice of pound cake has everyone sneaking into the kitchen for a midnight treat.
Please join me in raising a glass to Maverick. He would have loved the chance to sit with you. One of his favorite pastimes was “shooting the bull” with a good buddy over a cold drink.
