Duplin Dogs

Little Smokies taste good, right?  So, we decided to turn them into big smokies by simmering full-size hot dogs in sweet, smokey sauce and then plopping them on a bun with plenty of yummy toppings like candied jalapenos and corn chips. After tasting these Duplin Dogs, you may never just boil or steam hot dogs in water again.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups Duplin Pelican Red
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • ½ Duplin Gourmet Muscadine Carolina Mustard Sauce
  • ¼ cup Duplin Gourmet Cherry Balsamic Grilling Sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup water
  • 8 jumbo hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns, toasted
  • Toppings: sauteed sliced onions, candied jalapenos, corn chips, sauerkrauts, Duplin Gourmet Muscadine Red Pepper & Onion Relish

Directions:

  1. Combine wine, brown sugar, Duplin Gourmet sauces, ketchup and water in a large shallow skillet. Bring mixture to a simmer and allow sauce to reduce until thickened until it coats the back of a spoon.
  2. Add hot dogs to the sauce and cook them until heated through, about 10 minutes.
  3. Set up a self-service hot dog bar with dogs in wine sauce, toasted buns and toppings.
  4. Makes 8 servings.
